The people who live in Laos and Vietnam use bamboo in everyday life to the extent you can call it a staple. In the wild it grows quickly and naturally and villages harvest it for their own use and for export. Bamboo properties are strength and it weighs very little. It grows very fast up to 1.2 m a day if you can believe that. It is plentiful and no special cultivation is required. It is also resistant to rot which makes it perfect for building and there are many buildings several hundred years old made of bamboo.

Bamboo is  used for basket making.

Bamboo is very supple and can be woven into almost any shape. Basket in the villages are made predominantly by men. The men soak the  bamboo and divide into strips. These stips can then be woven to a variety of different styles of basket.

Baskets can have frames and pieces of wood to add rigidity. Once woven the basketsn smoke in a fire hearth which prevents bugs.

I had no idea how to write a good dissertation results chapter and did some research, and have to say that, surprisingly, making baskets is widely known art for Laos and Vietnam women.
